<Synopsis>

In part 1, Sulfikar Amir screened two documentary films: “Nuclear Java” and “Healing Fukushima.” “Nuclear Java” depicts the politics behind nuclear power in Indonesia and the often-conflicting views of experts and residents regarding the technology. “Healing Fukushima” depicts the medical responses to the March 11, 2011 nuclear disaster, including the risks medical prefectures in Fukushima Prefecture faced, their views of these risks, and the contexts in which they operated. The films stimulated a discussion on the relationship between society and technology, including the risks that can sometimes be apparent and other times hidden, and the social vulnerabilities that lie behind them.
In part 2, Amir delivered a lecture in which he addressed the issues highlighted in part 1 and introduced the research he conducts. The professor discussed how to understand the various vulnerabilities present in Singapore from sociological and socio-technical perspectives.
According to Amir, in a glocalized society, the vulnerability in people’s lives becomes more complex and opaque. Amir underscored the need for more refined sociological and humanities perspectives that can illuminate the obscurities.
