    Institute of Folklore Studies Holds Seminar: “Conversation with a German Ethnologist”

<Dates & Venue>
On Friday, October 12, 2018, Seijo University’s Institute of Folklore Studies hosted a seminar, “Dialogue With a German Ethnologist,” in the Seijo University Library’s audio-visual hall.

<Synopsis>
Ethnology and folklore studies are academically recognized disciplines in many overseas countries, including Germany, the USA, China, and South Korea. Recently, the Folklore Society of Japan has been working to promote exchanges between ethnologists and folklorists around the world. Seijo University’s Institute of Folklore Studies, likewise, plans to hold exchanges with overseas ethnologists and folklorists in an effort to develop the discipline.
As the title suggests, the seminar was an initiative to engage dialogue between German and Japanese ethnologists.
The guest speaker at the event was Johannes Moser, head of the Institute of Folklore / European Ethnology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU), Munich. Moser presented his ethnological study of Dresden (a city in Germany), titled “The Habitus of Dresden: Distinction and Representation in the ‘Beautiful’ City.” Hakaru Hokkyo (Keio University) and Hiroki Okada (Kobe University) commented on the presentation, offering perspectives of Japanese urban folklore and cultural anthropology, respectively. This commentary was then followed by a discussion among the speakers and the audience.
The event was well attended, despite being held on a weekday, and there were lively exchanges of views. We wish to thank all those who attended.
